How Do ChatGPT Usage Limits Work?

“ChatGPT limit reached” is often a chat messaging cap — not the Codex 5-hour / weekly windows, even on the same Plus or Pro account.

ChatGPT plans include several meters. Consumer chat models can have their own messaging limits. Codex and ChatGPT Work share a different allowance when those features are on the plan. Open Settings → Usage and read which product the bar belongs to.

Do not mix the two dashboards

If Codex CLI /status still has remaining but ChatGPT web is blocked, you likely hit a chat cap. If ChatGPT chat works but Codex is blocked, you hit the Codex / Work pool.

Plan-specific Codex pages: Plus · Pro · Work.

How to check ChatGPT usage

  1. ChatGPT → Settings → Usage
  2. Note model family, messaging remaining, and any reset time on that bar
  3. If you also use Codex, scroll / switch to the Codex / Work section instead of assuming it is the same number

When ChatGPT usage resets

ChatGPT messaging windows are account- and model-specific. Trust the timestamp on that bar. For Codex personal vs public resets, use Codex reset time.

AI Limit

Need Codex reset alerts, not ChatGPT chat caps?

AI Limit tracks public Codex global and banked resets. ChatGPT messaging remaining stays in Settings → Usage.

Track public Codex resets

AI Limit monitors public Codex reset signals and sends an alert directly to your iPhone. It does not read your private ChatGPT / Codex remaining usage.
