The 5-hour limit is the short rolling window that can stop a session even when your weekly allowance is not empty.
/status — not on this page.
OpenAI describes the five-hour limit as the amount of included usage in each short window. A new window starts when you send your first message after the previous window ends. You can reach the 5-hour limit before five hours have passed if that window’s allowance is used up.
This is why searches like “codex 5 hour limit reached” and “when can I use Codex again” usually mean: which window is blocking me?
| 5-hour limit | Weekly limit | |
|---|---|---|
| Horizon | Hours — recovers inside a day | Days — the longer planning cap |
| Typical feel | Stopped mid-session | Out until the weekly reset |
| Can it block first? | Yes, even with weekly remaining | Yes, even after a 5-hour refresh |
| Where to check | Settings → Usage / /status |

Full model: How do Codex usage limits work?. If the 5-hour window has refreshed but you're still blocked, you may have reached your Codex weekly limit.
AI Limit
AI Limit tracks public Codex reset signals and usage windows so you are not refreshing Settings all day.
/status./status.
Personal vs public timing: Codex Reset Time.
/status.A public automatic reset applies to the limits named in that announcement. A full banked reset refreshes both the 5-hour and weekly windows and changes the weekly reset date. Confirm in Settings after it lands.
Using a full banked reset changes the weekly reset date; window timestamps can move after a refresh. Always re-check Settings → Usage.
AI Limit monitors public Codex reset signals and sends an alert directly to your iPhone. It does not read your private ChatGPT / Codex remaining usage.
All Codex pages link back to the Codex Usage Limits & Reset Tracker hub.
